In today’s podcast, authors Sarah K. Ahmed, Christine Hertz and Kristine Mraz discuss empathy not as something we have, but rather as an ongoing, daily practice that must be prioritized in our minds and actions.

If we want kids to learn to comprehend others' identities and perspectives, those identities and perspectives must be shared. To do this productively while also maintaining a safe environment for our kids, we may need to modify our approach.

Sara defines social comprehension as developing “skills and habits to help us comprehend social issues and participate in relevant, transparent conversations.” She points out that this skill is learned, and to me, that means we need to be teaching it from the first day of school in kindergarten.

There are few absolutes in social comprehension; full immersion in it often yields more questions than answers. This work is messy because it is authentic and because it deals with human beings.

How do we create learning conditions where kids can ask the questions they want to ask and have tough conversations? Author Sara Ahmed says it begins with discomfort and not trying to save the moment.
