Overview

Math workshop helps to decrease anxiety, increase engagement, and provide students with differentiated instruction. Through whole group lessons, small group instruction, and learning stations, students explore mathematics, developing a conceptual understanding of the content. Through math workshop, teachers have a process to address student needs using inquiry and cooperative activities. Math workshop provides teachers with a framework for how to best use every instructional minute and the pedagogy that supports student achievement. This session will reveal how the philosophy of math workshop is connected to research and how the model can be applied regardless of existing textbooks or curriculum.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of what Math Workshop is and why it supports learning for ALL students
  • Investigate three buckets to successfully establishing the math workshop model in your classroom: 1. Classroom arrangement, 2. Routines and procedures, and 3. Mathematics community
  • Explore the potential within the opening, middle, and closing phases of math workshop to maximize engagement and tailor instruction to diverse learner needs
  • Reflect on current instructional practices in mathematics and identify connections to math workshop
