Shifts and Challenges in Teaching Math

Math in Practice is a comprehensive, grade-by-grade professional learning resource designed to fit with any math curriculum you are using. It identifies the big ideas of both math content and math teaching, unpacking key instructional strategies and detailing why those strategies are so powerful.

Rather than providing another sequence of lessons and units to take students from the beginning to the end of the year, Math in Practice focuses on developing deep content knowledge, understanding why certain strategies and approaches are most effective, and rethinking our beliefs about what math teaching should be.

Teaching styles and methods have shifted; the way you were taught when you were a student may be different than what methods are being used today. In this video, co-authors Laura Hunovice and Marcy Myers discuss some ways in which math instruction has changed recently, and some of the challenges that shift poses for teachers.

Laura Hunovice, co-author of Teaching First-Grade Math, has over 20 years of experience as an educator, most recently as a math coach supporting pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in Carroll County, Maryland. She is a core member of the Elementary Math Specialists and Teacher Leaders project—a project committed to helping math specialists effectively lead and mentor their colleagues—who has also presented at several state and national conferences.

Marcy Myers, co-author of Teaching Kindergarten Math, has over 20 years of education experience, both as a classroom teacher and currently as an elementary mathematics resource teacher supporting pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in a Title I school. She is certified as a mathematics instructional leader, a core member of the Elementary Math Specialists and Teacher Leaders project, and has also presented at several state and national conferences.
