Summer Reading Camp is an opportunity to try out some of the reading strategies from The Reading Strategies Book and experience first-hand how the strategies work in conjunction with Understanding Texts and Readers.

Monday

Today's lesson is about monitoring our engagement and reflecting on how we get our best reading done, a variation of strategy 2.1 from The Reading Strategies Book.

Tuesday

Today's focus is on understanding the setting. We explore how mood and impact character using strategy 5.28 from The Reading Strategies Book with a bit from strategy TI.27 from Complete Comprehension: Fiction. For more on setting, see also Understanding Texts & Readers.

Wednesday

Today's video is about character, and the ways that contradictions can help us develop a deeper sense of who the character is. Strategy 6.23 from The Reading Strategies Book. For more information on what to expect of characters in the texts your students are reading and the sorts of responses to coach them into, see Understanding Texts & Readers.

Thursday

Today's video explores ways to understand the vocabulary and figurative language in books. Refer to strategy 11.9 "Stick to Your Story" from The Reading Strategies Book. More info on expectations for reader response with V&FL can be found in Understanding Texts & Readers

Friday
