We've taken your questions and created this step-by-step guide to purchasing, downloading, and reading our eBooks. For Any Computer or Device, Before you purchase an eBook from our website, you'll need:
-A Heinemann.com account
-An Adobe ID
-The Adobe Digital Edition App (for a tablet) or program (on a computer). please see instructions for downloading this App in the section for the specific sort of device or computer you'll be using.
First, Create your Heinemann.com Account
If you don't already have one, we highly recommend you create a Heinemann.com account before purchasing an eBook from Heinemann. To do this, go to heinemann.com and look for the “create account” button at the top right of the homepage. At that point you’ll just need to enter your name, email address, and create a password and you'll all set up.
If you already have a Heinemann.com account, we suggest you log into it before making your eBook purchase.
Then be sure to create an Adobe ID
Before purchasing your eBook from Heinemann.com, you will also need to create a free Adobe ID account in order to access your eBook file. To do so, visit Accounts.Adobe.com to create your Adobe ID.
Below you'll find instructions for purchasing and accessing a Heinemann eBook for your iPad or Tablet

- If you plan to read our eBook on a PC, please note you cannot use a Chromebook at this time or Adobe Acrobat. We recommend using the Adobe Digital Editions app, which can be downloaded from the Adobe website for free.
- Heinemann eBooks have DRM protection, so the look and feel of how you access our materials might be different from other eBooks you’ve used from other vendors.

Download the Adobe Digital Editions App or Program
Skipping this step will prevent your eBook from being downloaded to your device after your purchase from Heinemann.com. Please read carefully.
- Navigate to the Adobe Digital Editions app in the App store, or via the Adobe Digital Edition website.
- Complete installation of the Adobe Digital App as you would any other app on your device
- Once you’ve downloaded the Adobe Digital Edition app onto your device, you’ll want to log in with your Adobe ID. To do so, open the app on your device, and tap on the upper left three lines, navigate to settings, then enter your Adobe ID email and password and tap authorize.
Purchase An eBook
With the Adobe Digital Edition now installed on either your device or computer, return to Heinemann.com to make your eBook purchase.
- Log into Heinemann.com.
- Find the eBook you wish to purchase by navigating to the product page and choosing the eBook purchasing option.
- Complete the purchase via Heinemann.com.
- Once your purchase is processed, you will receive an email from us with the links to download your eBook. We suggest opening this email or the link within, on the device you plan on reading the eBook on. You can select either ePub or PDF. ePub is more ideal for tablets or e-readers. (see image below)
- On the device with your Adobe Digital Editions app installed, log in with your Adobe ID, then once you tap or click on the link from the email, the Adobe Digital Editions app or program should instantly launch and open your eBook.
- If you’re only purchasing one ebook at a time, you can simply access it from the email confirming your purchase or by logging into your online resources from Heinemann.com where you can select either ePub or PDF. For bulk purchases, please refer to the FAQ section at the bottom of this blog.

Download the Adobe Digital Editions App or Program
Skipping this step will prevent your eBook from being downloaded to your device after your purchase from Heinemann.com. Please read carefully.
- Navigate to the Adobe Digital Editions app in the App store, or via the Adobe Digital Edition website.
- Click on “Download Digital Edition 4.5.11 Macintosh (22MB)” (see screenshot below)
- find the file in your downloads folder (file name “ADE_4.5_Installer.dmg”) and double click to view the installer package.
- Click on the installer package (see screenshot below)
- The installation window will open. Follow all steps, clicking “Continue” and “Install” when prompted (see screenshot below).
- Once the installation is complete, open the Adobe Digital Editions program on your computer and enter your Adobe ID.
Purchase An eBook
- With the Adobe Digital Edition now installed on either your device or computer, return to Heinemann.com to make your eBook purchase.
- Log into Heinemann.com.
- Find the eBook you wish to purchase by navigating to the product page and choosing the eBook purchasing option.
- Complete the purchase via Heinemann.com.
- Once your purchase is processed, you will receive an email from us with the links to download your eBook. We suggest opening this email or the link within, on the device you plan on reading the eBook on. You can select either ePub or PDF. ePub is more ideal for tablets or e-readers. (see image below).
- From either the email confirming your purchase or from within your Heinemann.com online resources, select the file you would like to download (either ePUB or uPDF) and click on it to download it.
- Once the file downloads, click on the file (the name of the file will be URLLink.acsm)
- The Adobe Digital Editions program will open and, if you’re already logged in with your Adobe ID, the download will begin.
- If you’ve not been logged in with your Adobe ID, a window titled “Computer Authorization” will pop up (see screen shot).
note: If clicking on the URLLink.acsm file did not result in it being opened in Digital Editions, foolow these steps:- Click on File > Add to Library.
- Then click on the PDF/EPUB files drop down on the bottom and then select ACSM files.
- Locate the eBook file named URLLink.acsm (typically in your Downloads folder).
- Click Open.
- You will then be asked to set up an Adobe ID if you have not already added or set one up. You’ll need and Adobe ID if you would like to be able to view the eBook on multiple devices DO NOT authorize your computer without an Adobe ID as it will limit your options for how you read the eBook. (If you choose to authorize without an Adobe ID before you download the eBook the very first time, you will only be able to read the book on that device.)
- Click “Create an Adobe ID” if you do not already have one (see screenshot below)
Clicking “Create Adobe ID” will open up the Adobe account creation webpage in a web browser. The, enter your information and click "create account." - Enjoy your Heinemann eBook!

Download the Adobe Digital Editions App or Program

- Navigate to the Adobe Digital Editions app in the App store, or via the Adobe Digital Edition website.
- Click on the second link on the page that says “Download Digital Edition 4.5.11 Windows."
- Then you will need to double click on the file (find it in your downloads as “5_Installer.exe”) to view the installer package.
- The installation window will open. Click to allow the app to install and then follow all steps, checking the box to agree to the terms and then clicking “Next.”
- Once the installation of the app is complete, you will see a screen like the one below. Click “Close.”

- You will have the option to set up an Adobe ID If you have not yet done so) if you would like to be able to view the eBook on multiple devices.

Accessing your purchased eBook:
- Select the file you would like to download (either ePUB or uPDF) and click on it to download it (see screenshot below)
- Locate the file in your downloads folder (file name will be URLLink.acsm) and double click it to open it.
- It will open in the Adobe Digital Editions app and you will see a window like the one below
- You will have the option to set up an Adobe ID if you would like to be able to view the eBook on multiple devices if you have not already done this as suggested at the top of this blog. DO NOT authorize your computer without an Adobe ID as it will limit your options for how you read the eBook. (If you choose to authorize without an Adobe ID before you download the eBook the very first time, you will only be able to read the book on that device.)
- To set up an Adobe ID if you do not already have one, click “Create an Adobe ID” (see below).
- Once the Adobe ID is created, go back to the Adobe Digital Editions app and enter the email address and password for the Adobe ID you just set up.
- After you’ve authorized your computer, the eBook file will automatically start downloading in the Adobe Digital Editions app. You will see a screen like the one below as the download progresses.
- Once the download completes, the eBook will open. Enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Do I need a code?
A: No, for individual purchases of an eBook, you will not need a code. However, if you purchase an eBook in bulk (meaning many copies of one eBook) from Heinemann.com, you will need a registration code for access. Otherwise, single purchases can be accessed immediately from the email, if you have both the Adobe Digital Reader app installed and the Adobe ID entered into the Adobe Digital Reader App.
Q: Can I use a different app?
A: Only apps that support Adobe ID access will be able to show your Heinemann.com eBook purchase.
Q: What device can I read my eBook on?
Any device that can download and use the Adobe Digital Reader app, and log in with an Adobe ID. This includes most tablets and personal computers except for Chrome books. Chrome books and Adobe Acrobat are not compatible with Heinemann eBooks at this time.
