Why Is Now The Time For Inquiry?

In the new and revised edition of Comprehension and Collaboration, Stephanie Harvey and Harvey "Smokey" Daniels invite you to approach inquiry as a way of instruction in schools.

Comprehension and Collaboration, Revised Edition ships in late June. In today's blog, coauthor Smokey describes the need to continue inquiry especially in light of the Common Core State Standards.

The Principles of Inquiry Circles

  • Choice of topics based on genuine student curiosity, questions, interests
  • Digging deeply into complex, authentic topics that matter to kids
  • Flexible grouping, featuring small research teams, groups, and task forces
  • Heterogeneous, nonleveled groups with careful differentiation
  • Student responsibility and peer leadership
  • Use of proficient-reader/thinker/researcher strategies
  • Teacher modeling his/her own reading, writing, thinking, and researching processes
  • Drawing upon multiple sources: multigenre, multilevel, multicultural, and multimedia
  • Going beyond fact finding to synthesizing ideas and building and acquiring knowledge
  • Actively using knowledge in our schools and communities: sharing, publication, products, or taking action
  • Matching or "backmapping" kids' learning to the Common Core or to state or district standards.

What Is Inquiry All About Anyway?

In the new and revised edition of Comprehension and Collaboration, Stephanie Harvey and Harvey "Smokey" Daniels invite you to see inquiry not as a project-based mode of learning but as something that happens all the time in every classroom.

Comprehension and Collaboration, Revised Edition ships in late June. In today's blog, coauthor Stephanie Harvey describes inquiry as a way of living and learning inside of school.

Principles That Guide Us

When we commit to helping kids develop and use knowledge, we carefully set the scene. We create a culture where everyone can think and investigate well together. As we know, any culture is made up of beliefs, attitudes, habits, routines, rituals, systems, processes, materials, and artifacts. Ten key elements are important when we work with kids. We consistently see these same elements being skillfully addressed in the classrooms of veteran inquiry teachers like the ones who have contributed to this book. In inquiry-based classrooms we do the following:

  1. Set up a flexible and engaging environment
  2. Gather great text, resources, and technology
  3. Hone our teaching language
  4. Provide for rich interaction
  5. Differentiate instruction for everyone
  6. Teach with the big ideas in mind
  7. Promote authenticity, relevance, and significance
  8. Think about purpose
  9. Foster passion, curiosity, and fun
  10. Help kids take action.
