Dedicated to Teachers

Fountas & Pinnell Literacy at ILA 2015

“Continued learning is essential if teachers are to accomplish their goals.”
—Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell, Guided Reading, 1996

Each year, teachers and educators flock to the International Literacy Association (ILA) annual conference in an effort to continue their professional growth. This year, although ILA has a new name, the ultimate goal of the conference remains the same: “high-quality professional learning that's personally fulfilling for every educator and literacy leader.”

Decades of Guided Reading: The Romance and the Reality K-6
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
America’s Center, Room 130

In this session, Fountas and Pinnell will discuss the romance in guided reading. They will address the many important worldwide shifts in small-group instruction over the past two decades, including the selection of books to match readers to their instructional level, the development of school bookrooms, and the focus on small-group instruction. They will argue for continued refinement of teacher understandings to include going beyond the superficial parts of the lesson to the expert decision-making needed within the lesson to make guided reading powerful for diverse learners. A focus on the role of assessment and the role of facilitative talk that supports the reader's development of strategic actions will be included.

Prevent the grave consequences of failure with the bold teaching moves needed to promote deep thinking, efficient word analysis, and fluent reading that will extend students’ reading power in all disciplines. View videos of the essential elements of instruction and management needed to propel students to a literate life. One session attendee will win a Leveled Literacy Intervention System, a prize package totaling up to $4,500. Must be present to win.
